Our Story
|
Bolts & Nuts, Inc. is a Chattanooga owned fastener distributor that stocks a complete
line of commercial and construction fasteners including all types of headed and
threaded products and masonry anchors. Our market includes the OEM (original equipment
manufacturing), maintenance, and construction industries. Bolts & Nuts personnel
consistently serve our customers face to face and deliver products at least twice
weekly within an 80-mile radius of Chattanooga. Commercial carriers and UPS serve
national contracts as far away as California.
History
Bolts & Nuts opened in 1979. The company founders are Mack Catlin, who retired in
2001; Eddie Crandall, who is deceased; and Mike Crandall. Over the past 26 years
we have grown our employee base to 30 people. Bolts & Nuts diversified staff of
30 has helped build the company into the region’s leading fastener distributor in
terms of market share. They have done so in the face of large national distributors.
What Makes us Successful
There are five keys to Bolts & Nuts’ success.
First, locally owned companies have more agility than national firms with their
layers of decision makers. Our customers have the advantages of faster and easier
decision making, problem solving, technical assistance, and product availability.
Second, Bolts & Nuts succeeds by concentrating on maintaining relationships. Our
personnel strive for enduring commitments through face to face interaction from
our four outside sales staff and our five inside sales representatives.
Third, Bolts & Nuts provides service. Twice weekly deliveries mean that our customers
do not have to pay freight charges or devote time and personnel to picking up products.
Should an interim needs arise, our employees adapt deliveries immediately to accommodate
our clients. Our policy is to provide trained employees to handle all incoming calls
professionally. There are always real people answering the telephone. We strive
to provide thoughtful help and responses to any concerns. Our staff is equipped
to give quick and accurate answers on pricing, availability and past history of
parts used so that customers can count on us to help them with ordering, control,
planning, or projecting future inventory levels. Bolts & Nuts has done a great job
in taking the best from the old (i.e. personal contact and real people solving issues)
and combining it with the best of the new to meet the demands in today’s marketplace.
Our modern inventory systems, computerized record keeping, and ordering histories
all result in easier, more efficient tasks for our employees and customers.
Fourth, getting the job done, going out of the way to accommodate the customers’
requests, whether it’s supplying special products based on custom design prints
or simply hopping in the car to drive a part to a customer with an emergency. Today’s
buyers expect more value added services such as inventory management programs and
our company goes the extra step of carrying backup stock to cushion those plants
that may run short. Bolts & Nuts dedicates 15,000 of our 20,000 square feet to inventory.
At any given time, Bolts & Nuts has thousands of different line items in stock totaling
in excess of 24 million fastener pieces – from .00 to 4” diameter and lengths from
1/8” to 12 feet.
Fifth, employee commitment. Each year since 1979, Bolts & Nuts has increased sales
and is quick to give credit for its success to its employees who are self-motivated
and self-driven. A founding principle is to provide an environment where our personnel
obtain recognition and a sense of personal worth. We want our employees to say that
Bolts & Nuts is a great place to work.
